Aceh Gayo Peaberry Green Coffee Beans are a unique physical selection of one of Indonesia’s most recognized specialty coffee origins. Sourced from the Gayo Highlands of Aceh at elevations between 1200 and 1700 meters above sea level, this coffee benefits from fertile volcanic soil and a cool mountain climate, producing a rich and well-balanced cup profile.
The Peaberry variant occurs naturally when a coffee cherry develops a single round seed instead of the usual two flat beans. This results in a smaller, denser, and more uniform bean shape. Due to this structure, Peaberry beans often exhibit more consistent heat absorption during roasting, making them preferred by roasters seeking precision and control.
In the cup, Aceh Gayo Peaberry maintains the classic Sumatra profile, characterized by chocolate sweetness, nutty aroma, and a full body. Typical flavor notes include dark chocolate, brown sugar, mild spice, and subtle earthy tones, supported by medium acidity and a smooth, rounded mouthfeel. While the flavor profile is generally aligned with standard Gayo coffee, some lots may present a slightly more concentrated and vibrant expression due to the bean’s density.
A distinctive characteristic of many Indonesian coffees is the wet-hulled processing method, locally known as Giling Basah. In this process, coffee beans are hulled while still containing around 30–35% moisture, before being fully dried to about 11–13% moisture content, contributing to the heavier body and deeper flavor profile associated with Sumatra coffees.
Peaberry selections are typically separated during grading and are available in limited quantities. They are valued not only for their distinctive appearance and rarity, but also for their roasting consistency and niche market appeal, making them a compelling option for buyers seeking differentiation within the Gayo origin.
